Wildfires and Ghosts: Pathogen
Epidemics and Agricultural Abandonment in Italy
The article I read was very informative and really helps you
understand the bigger picture of what all goes on when there is a fire. Fires
start for multiple reasons but some you do not think about. Some fires have
been linked to pathogens, biochemical processes, and of course climate change. In Italy, more recent fires have caused mass
destruction and even burned 1,400 hectares of forests. When these massive fires
happen it usually leads to the abandonment of the land. When the land is abandoned,
it has a hard time growing due to the char and ashes from the fire. This
is bad because those areas become dry fields that do not help absorb carbon
dioxide or have a habitat for animals to live in. New organizations have been
founded to help change the outcome after fires happen. One organization is
called Comunità del Bosco it was founded in 2018. They have taken these abandoned
lands and cleaned them up. One of the more impactful services they offer is
planting different species of trees that do not burn as easily. They also help communities
build infrastructure to make fire-prone areas more resistant and safer. When they
are finished with pieces of land, they have made new areas for animals to
thrive and to let the environment recover naturally. The impact they have
reduces the risk of forest fires by taking abandoned land where the start of a
fire is likely and converting them into a lush green area. In summary the fewer
fires there are means not as much climate pollution.
