Sociolinguistics

The article I read was about Sociolinguistics. Sociolinguists is the study of the language used in social situations and can often reflect differences like dialect, social class, or bilingualism. Lately, Sociolinguistics has become a more popular field of study. the reason being for this is how different cultures around the world expand and change their communications including their intergroup and interpersonal relations. Language can often reflect certain behaviors and human interactions. One example of behavioral traits that could be shown in social interactions is the sentence structures or certain ways in which language should be used taught to a child at a younger age. Something I found interesting was when they mentioned how certain situations can affect the choice of language used. It also talked about social relationships within a community. For example, a child or younger person might address an adult as "Mrs. or Ms." which can show the social relationship between the person being addressed and the addressee. This example makes the conversation sound more formal, if you were talking to a group of friends you wouldn't address them as "Mrs. or Ms." making the conversation sound friendlier in a way. Another thing I found interesting is the different ways people might ask for something. An example the article gave was someone asking for salt. One way someone could ask this would be, "Can you pass the salt?" another way would be, "this could use a little salt." To me, the first one sounds more polite and it sounds like an actual question. The second one could come off as ruder or could even sound like criticism.
