The Asch Conformity Experiments

The first Asch Conformity experiment was done in the 1950s created by the psychologist Solomon Asch. This experiment was made to test how people would respond to a fact based question based on how others in a group would respond. This was tested by gathering a small group of university students where all but one were aware of the experiment. The group was shown a card with a black vertical line, and then were shown another card with three more black vertical lines labeled A,B, and C. One of the three lines was the same length as the first black line while the other two were either shorter or longer. The students went around the room, ending with the real subject, giving their answer to which line, A, B, or C, was closest to the original line in length. Sometimes the group would give the wrong answer and other times they would give the right answer. The goal was to see how the real participant would answer based on the response of the rest of the group to see if they would maintain or break the conformity. What was discovered through this experiment was that at half the time one third of the real participants would give the wrong answer in order to conform with the rest of the group. 40% of the participants gave some wrong answers as only one fourth gave the correct answer despite what the rest of the group said. This fascinating experiment has been repeated and tested again and again over the years with subtle changes such as group size, age difference, having students and non-students, and different settings, but the result always came back the same. This experiment's connection to sociology is based on the power of social forces and its effect on people's lives. The expectations and behavior that we see in our everyday lives are what help to shape our place in the social world. It is these things that allow us to understand what is right and wrong, and what is defined as normal in our society. This experiment can pose very interesting questions and concerns about how we as our own open minded people can be easily shut down from voicing our opinions based on the hopes being part of a group's conformity rather than speaking truthfully.
