A common theme that I found throughout these readings was imagination. I found a lot of it in the Iroquois creation story right of the bat. There are a lot of ways that different cultures write their story for the creation of life. If I heard this story directly from the Native Americans I feel like it would be a lot more creative than hearing it after getting translated by a European. Sinking through a mattress into the underworld sounds like someone brought that idea from a dream and turned it into a story. Not only was imagination used in the creation story, but it was also used in Sherman Alexie’s autobiography. When he was learning how to read he used his imagination to visualize paragraphs. Not only did he explain this visualization of fences in words, but he also used it for his everyday life. He created an image in my head by telling us that his neighbors and families had fences. These fences helped Alexie understand everyone was living in their own little paragraphs. Listening to other people’s stories helped me create a vision of their imaginations in my head.
