Native American Reading Reflection
From the readings that we explored throughout class what I was most fascinated by was how religion was such a big part of how Native Americans were able to share their stories. Before reading these articles my knowledge of the Europeans and the Native Americans interaction was limited to Columbus and terrible things he did. However after reading these articles I understand that the Euproenas did have a different impact on the Native Americans and were able to expand the level of communication that the Native Americnas had. While this writing was a benefit as it allowed communication and documentation of culture it is important to acknowledge that the means of teaching were not entirely in good faith. Because of the influence that Church had at the time it was very interesting to read how that had an effect on the Native Americans stories when translated. What I found most interesting about the translation was how similar the creation story from the Native Americans and the one heard of in christianity were to each other. While there were some clear differences there were also some clear similarities that made you think of how the Europeans had an effect on these stories. I personally found that the similarities that were in the Native American Creation allowed me to better understand the story and gain a greater sense of understanding. When looking back on this subject I find it so fascinating that the Europeans were able to teach some of the Native Americans an entirely new language disregarding their lack of a written language system. What I am curious about would be exploring how things changed with the native Americans that learned from the church and if they potentially changed their religious views. I would also be curious to see how big of an influence the European teachings had on the original Native American creation story.
