Why Should We Stop Focusing on Trash Clean-Up in the Ocean?

When reading the Gizmodo article, 'Why Trying to Clean Up All the Ocean Plastic is Pointless', I learned that perhaps all our efforts to clear up the debris in the ocean is actually non-beneficial, and how to actually help save the ocean. According to this article, rather than working on picking up trash already in the ocean, we should be focusing more on stopping the problem at the source -- in this case, the production and usage of plastic on such an immense scale. Essentially, if we continue to focus on clearing all the plastic out of the ocean but continue to mass-produce it and regurgitate it back into the sea, the initial clearing of it will be useless. No matter what, if we continue plastic manufacturing at this rate, the ocean will be filled with plastic. Even if we cleared all the plastic from the ocean and put it in landfills, sea levels would eventually rise and engulf that plastic as well. Therefore, this article suggests cutting off the problem at the source and compares the situation to an overflowing bathtub. In this situation, would you initially pick up a mop to clean the floor, or turn the tap off? Obviously, turn the tap off. Max Liboiron, assistant professor, compares this scenario to the plastic clogging up oceans. Although it seems incredibly difficult and would take years to even make a dent in the mass of plastic manufacturing, I agree with what he's saying. In order to begin to halt such mass production, however, many sustainable alternatives will need to take place of plastic which will possibly be less accessible and more expensive so the actual transition from one to another, along with having large corporations see the problem and actually care will probably take a long time.
