Brief History of Electric Lighting

In the year 1879 the brilliant scientist Thomas Edison invented the incandescent light bulb. The incandescent light bulb had a big effect on how people lived their lives as it traveled throughout America, slowly making it to rural areas out in the country. Soon after in 1882 electricity was readily available in cities with the first commercial power plants popping up. Electric lighting allowed for factories to be open 24/7 as this new lightbulb could last for far longer. Although, before Edison's creation of the light bulb we had the first form of constant electric light roughly 40 years earlier in 1835. Once electric lighting was created scientists worked to create an effective and long lasting light, although this failed, until Thomas Edison. The problem had to do with the filament that held the flame, which Thomas Edison was able to improve using a Carbonized filament of uncoated cotton thread that was able to last for 14.5 hours. Through more experimentation of these filaments Thomas Edison and his tema found a filament made from bamboo that gave his lamps a life span of 1,200 hours, a significant difference from the previous filament. This new filament would be the standard use in light bulbs for the next 10 years. While this new light bulb was fascinating, a controversial topic during this time was whether or not Einstein's light bulb infringed on other patents. William Sawyer and Albon Man were two of the original creators of the incandescent lamp which they received a U.S patent for. Another person by the name of Joseph Swan also had a patent on his own light bulb in England. While there was debate about the possible infringements Edison may have made with his light bulb, Thomas Edison's electric company eventually merged Sawyer and Man's company along with Joseph Swans. While Thomas Eidson is most known for the light bulb, he did not stop there. Edison continued to work with electric lighting to find more practical ways that it could be used. He used electricity to improve gas lighting systems, he also found out that electricity could be distributed from a central conductor through a series of tubes simultaneously. Thomas Edison then became the first to develop the first ever commercial power utility known as Pearl Street Station located in lower Manhattan. Thomas Edison played a massive role in the use of electric lighting which helped to improve housing, business, and factories all across the nation, a big point in the urbanization of the U.SA Short History of Electric Lighting
